“A six days’ bicycle contest was commenced yesterday in the Waverley Market, Edinburgh, between eight bicyclists for prizes amounting to £260. Keen, the champion bicyclist of the world, is running for exhibition. One of the bicyclists - Perry - had a bad spill shortly after starting, running right off the course against the barricading, and got somewhat hurt, but he very pluckily remounted as if nothing had occurred. The following are the distances accomplished at eleven o’clock last night:- Stanton, 178 miles; Cann, 176 miles 5 laps; Phillips, 182 miles; Bills, 24 miles 11 laps; Perry, 176 miles 8 laps; Pattison, 174 miles 8 laps; Daniels, 150 miles 1 lap; Nichols, 182 miles; Mackenzie, 66 miles 9 laps. Mackenzie commenced three hours behind the others, and left off the course three hours earlier. Bills, reserving himself for the 200 miles’ race, was only a short time on the course.”
